Novel airborne collision avoidance system for small and MALE UAVs.

Project: Airborne Anti-Stealth Technology

The novel airborne anti-stealth technology aims to increase radar cross section of a stealth system by augmenting relative permittivity and decreasing attenuation, with a consequent loss tangent. Non-lethal pulsed ND YAG 532 nm laser is the proposed solution for enhancing stealth EM 3500 wave absorber’s relative permittivity. This research involves a probabilistic algorithm for detecting a stealth target by using neural network as future implementation for anti-stealth technology.

Project: Natural Binocular Vision System

Airborne stereoscopically arranged cameras give the UAV pilot a natural binocular sight. The binocular vision system may be helpful when special attention is required. Alertness is increased, and pilots feel naturally immersed and get a realistic perception of depth. Putting on a VR-HMD is a signal to the brain for “Now we are on it! Attention!”. The most common mistakes and accidents are caused by fatique, simple boredom; however, the change and immersion can prevent that. It is proposed that Natural Binocular Vision should only be used while navigating manually, landing on an unknown ship deck, hovering between buildings or flying through mountains. The immersion in such situations leads to higher safety due to the increased alertness and foremost the fact that it doesn´t feel like the pilot is just sitting in front of the monitor. You are right in the situation!

Project: Plasma Actuation for Aerodynamic Flow Control

Pascual is working with international partners to develop and implement plasma actuation for aerodynamic flow control, and therefore flight control, in the MA THOR SolarLight unmanned aircraft. Recent applications of plasma actuation include high-speed flow control using localized arc filament plasma actuators, and low-speed flow control using dielectric barrier discharges and sliding discharges. A plasma actuator induces a local flow speed perturbation, which will be developed downstream to a vortex sheet. As a result, plasma actuators can behave as vortex generators. Plasma actuators can be mounted on an airfoil to control flight attitude. The cumbersome design and maintenance efforts of mechanical and hydraulic transmission systems in classical aileron, flaps and rudder can thus be saved. The price to pay is that one should design a suitable high voltage/power electric system satisfying EMC rule.
